Population Divisions & Project Categories
Volunteers are making a difference in Illinois by creating a positive environment in which businesses and families want to live and work. Yet, their efforts often go unheralded by their fellow citizens. When you give of your time, donate materials, or reach into your pocket to help guide youths, honor the Veterans, preserve your heritage, conserve our natural resources, or host a health fair, you are making Illinois a better place for all of us.
Presented continuously since 1983, the Governor’s Hometown Awards Program gives formal recognition to those who have answered the Constitution’s call and contributed to their community’s quality of life.
Awards are given in six project categories, based on six community population divisions. Applications for awards may be submitted by a variety of community representatives such as local governments, schools, community organizations, chambers of commerce, community action agencies, area agencies on aging, local job training organizations, etc.
A team of impartial volunteer judges will evaluate the applications on need, use of resources, and impact. Information will be gathered from two sources: the application, and a project presentation to be given in Springfield. The judges will select the category winners and also nominate one project from each population division to receive the coveted Governor's Cup, a traveling silver trophy which signifies the project deemed most representative of the spirit of Illinois volunteerism. The 2011 Governor's Cup Winner was the Mascoutah Little Indians Youth Football program. For a description of the project please click here.
All Governor's Home Town Awards winners will be recognized at a reception at the Governor's Mansion.
Thank you to all the volunteers who help to make Illinois a great place to live!
